I use a TV capture card to transfer from my 8 mm camcorder to my computer. My TV card is an ATI TV Wonder Pro. I picked it up on eBay for around $25. It allows you to use either s-video or RCA type input depending on what output your camcorder uses. The software that came with the card sucks....the audio would always be out of synch with the video, especially when capturing from a VCR or TV. So, I got a copy of Intervideo WinDVR 3 and the problem was solved. You can also use the Movie Maker program that comes with Windows XP to capture, but it is a very klutzy program to use.

Once I get some clips together, I use a program called MuVee Autoproducer to produce a nice finished movie without having to do a lot of editing. This is the program i used to create http://www.yuvutu.com//modules.php?name=Video&op=view&video_id=2744

To join short video clips together, i use AVI/MPEG/RM/WMV Joiner, http://www.boilsoft.com/
To cleanup and split a video, i use Easy Video Splitter, http://www.doeasier.org/splitter/
